A few Good Days

Hola faithful readers from Guadalajara,

Not a great deal to report today. Polley and I both have colds, so we have been taking it pretty easy. We have a trip planned for San Miguel de Allende for next week, so we want to be in decent shape. Despite the cold, I have been getting some walking in. This is a very big city, so there are lots of directions to aim. We have been reading and getting to know the others in the complex of 6 rooms. Gary is a retired furniture salesman from Chicago.

I mentioned Max, our substitute host, while the owner recovers from surgery. Rebecca is an artist from Brooklyn, while Steve, Ursula, their two daughters, Adelaide and Althea, along with Ursula’s dad occupy the other room. A nice group of people and no doubt I will have pictures of the others to follow.

There is a huge fruit and vegetable market near us. Amazing variety.

Also I caught this store nearby, with an assortment of piƱatas for sale.

We have had some very nice meals out. Nothing really fancy. Went to a place called Antigua the first night. Polley had a good Chile Relleno. The next night we went to the dining room of an old hotel, The Mendoza. Very nice place and we were the only ones in it. It looked very pricey, but was, in fact, very cheap. We shared a good tortilla soup, and then I had some fish tacos and Polley had a half an avocado filled with Tuna Salad. All quite good. We are now focusing on tortilla soup as every place seems to have their own take on it. This one was very tomato-y!

The next night we went to kind of hip chain restaurant, called Chai. We had remembered this from our brief visit last year. Had a very good salmon panino and a bread bowl filled with a tuna-based dip. Again, good , but reasonable.

Wednesday night took us to La Chinalina’s. Another neighborhood place and again nearly empty. We had a very good soup, not tortilla, but a spicy vegetable with large pieces of shredded chicken. We followed it with a very disappointing chicken salad that Max had recommended! Probably our least satisfying meal.

We have enjoyed walking about the city. We found a little wine bar on the edge of the Teatro in the Plaza. From their we have observed a variety of street artists. This guy dresses as a robot and moves in a very mechanical fashion, creating an electronic sound. Little kids come up and drop coins in the little can he carries and he interacts with them.

We even became a part of this clown’s street show as he stole Polley purse, later apologizing with the gift of a flower.

One of my favorites was this juggler. When a light turns red and cars stop, he jumps into the crosswalk and juggles for 30 seconds and then runs to car windows for the next 30 seconds trying to collect coins.

The entrepreneurial spirit seems alive in Guadalajara!

We do have a couple of animals at our “Hotelito.” So far I have only been able to capture Azul, the blue-point long-haired cat.

Lobo is the dog, but he is terrified of cameras. Had a bad experience with a flash once and avoids them at all cost.

I did capture a photo of the Teatro Degollado. It was not afraid of camera

All-in-all, it is very different from PV, but life is good and we are enjoying all the big city has to offer.

Ed and Polley
