Good News

Dear friends and family,

Just a quick update. At 5:30 this evening, following 6 days of hospitalization, Polley is home and on the mend! Hooray! Initial surgery was said to have gone well. Drugs and the shock of the fall seemed to leave her a bit disoriented, but she made such great strides in the last 48 hours that she was released to home and avoided the rehabilitation center. So now, with a walker for a few weeks, then a cane and about 8 weeks following last Tuesday's surgery, she should be back to 100%. Thanks for all your kind thoughts and support. It is great to have such good friends and family. It makes it so much easier.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Dear Friends and Family,

Dear friend, Richard Bower has insisted on some closure you our Mexico adventure, so I am using this forum for that along with some sad news as well.

First, we survived the dangers of Mexico, arriving back very late on 2 April, just in time for taxes and a huge vet bill! Welcome home. Our now very fat cat, Quirk, developed ABS (or something like it) and needed a series of x-rays, a change of diet and some awful mixture for constipation stuffed into him twice daily. Fun! However, he is recovering.

We immediately started in on the yard. The only blessing is that nothing much grows, except weeds, in the winter months, so we started to get a handle on that aspect of our home. Also, thanks to our friend, Rae, the house was clean from top to bottom, so we we could delay that reality.

However, last Monday evening, about 11:30 p.m., as the lunar eclipse was taking place, Polley slipped on the stairs from our upstairs bedroom and, yes, BROKE HER HIP! So, about 2:00 p.m. yesterday afternoon, she went into surgery, coming out from the recovery room about 7:30 last night. One misstep and we will be involved in a couple of months of intense physical therapy. Not fun, but it is what it is! After 3 months of walking the cracked, broken, missing sidewalks of Mexico, we find tragedy in our own home. Go figure

So, while there is closure to our Mexico adventure, there is a new adventure awaiting the Bowens, as we work to get Polley ready for our sojourn to Europe on August 6th. We hope that it will be that carrot that keeps Polley working to come back. I am sure you all wish her well and I will try to keep you posted on her progress. I am not sure when she will be coming home. The physical therapy and occupational therapy people will determine when she is ready to get around the house and when the house is properly prepared to make things as convenient as possible. She may be home as early as Friday, or she may need to go to a rehabilitaiton center for a period of time to train herself to get around. Patience will be the key, but as I am sure most of you know, that has never been Polley's or my strong suit. More later.

Lasting Impressions

Dear Friends and Family,

It is "El ultimo dia"! The last day before we catch a United flight and spend way to much time in the Houston Airport before arriving home tomorrow at about midnight. Thanks to my brother in advance for picking us up. It has been a very nice last three months, but we are truly ready to come home, despite advanced reports of rain and much colder temperatures. Dorothy was right, "There's no place like home."

There has been little drama in the last days of our stay. I did get out walking on the Malécon each morning, opting to put aside the headphones, and the music, and the French lessons (our next sojourn) and just enjoy each and every morning for what it was. I really love walking through various cities and villages and watch them come alive in the morning. Friday, as I headed for a trip around the pier, I caught some dolphins swimming very close.

Trying to catch dolphins on film is a bit like herding cats. You just keep clicking and hope you get lucky. I did manage to preserve a couple of glimpses

The night before Polley and I joined some new friends, Art and Marilyn Schweinoff, from Vancouver, WA
for a meal at Casa Isabel, catching the spectacular view in the daylight this time.

It is quite a place

and the new manager, Carl, was nice enough to give us a little tour of the accommodations

This was the only way we were going to see the place, as rooms go for $400 to about $900 a night! However, that does include a resident cat

It seems to feature every convenience, including the relaxing infinity hot tub

No a bad place to settle back after a hard day of drinking margaritas. While Thursday evening was crowded and we were not able to hear as well as on our first visit, we enjoyed the father and son musical duo for a second time

Last night we joined my brother and his wife (they head home today) to inspect a condominium that they are flirting with. It is very nice and has a spectacular view

It was another perfect evening in PV and this condo has a 180-degree view of BAnderas Bay

If I have to leave you with a lasting impression of this three month holiday, it would, naturally, be a sunset.

As the sun sets on this year's visit to PV, Polley and I wish to thank all of you for following along and for your thoughtful and sometimes wise-ass comments. While traveling is great fun, it is nice to know there are good friends and family waiting back home. See all of you soon.
