A Study in Contrasts

One and all,

Well, I was all prepared to dazzle you with dramatic tales of breaching whales, and playful dolphins, of glittering sunlight and spectacular seas - our Whale Watching Excusion - - - CANCELLED. Well, that might be a bit dramatic. Let us say, Postponed. I am not exactly sure what, but my speculation is that this was a trip that was put together as part of a "medical tourism" package and that we were invited along to sort of piggyback on the request. The problem was that the "patient" was not feeling well, so all bets were off. Another day, perhaps. You never know with Alfred, our landlord. He takes the idea that "all life is an improvisation," to its illogical extreme. For that, "That's Mexico!"

So, what looked like a busy Saturday, was a lovely, relaxing day. It was nice to receive some e-mails and photos from home. Let me share. First, from Cyndi, Polley's middle son's partner, a dramatic picture of their frozen deck, looking out on the Willamette

Then, our trusty housesitter, Sam Lamport, was kind enough to give us some images of home. First Quirk, taking a licking, but still, obviously, ticking

While upstairs, Casper continues to prosper in his full bedroom, full bath suite

and, finally, Sam caught a confused, but fit stray that has taken over the backyard

Great to have a little touch of home. Despite the warmth and sunshine, we do miss it, from time to time.

For us, Friday and Saturday were a study in contrasting sunsets. The rest of the day was quite regular, but all last week, by early afternoon, the skies were clouding over and by 6 pm, there seemed to even be a threat of rain. Despite that, it did make for some beautiful skies.

This was taken from just beyond Roberto's, looking south along the Malécon. The amazin thing was that after the sun went down, the colors got increasingly intense

Oh, that I could but paint. Wonderful swirling clouds and very dramatic colors. The show continued

Again, not Photoshop. By contrast, the weather patterns changed yesterday. At the beach, late in the morning, we got some high clouds. By 6 that evening, the skies were absolutely clear.

Not as dramatic, as there was very little for the sun to bounce it rays off, but it was a nearly idyllic night

So, as disappointing as our cancellation was (not really too disappointing), it was a very nice end to the week. We continue to wear out our Kindles with books (Polley highly recommends The Ocean at the End of the Lane), make our routine stops at the beach and La Fuente and make sunset a priority. Who could blame us! More in the week to come and one and all, stay warm!
