Holiday Wanderings

One and all,

This past weekend was the "Día de la Candelaria" (Day of the Candles or Candle Mass). It happens on February 2, and is a Mexican celebration that is fusion of the Catholic influences and native Mexican tradition. Regardless of past traditions, it makes for a wild Mexican weekend. As a Mexican waiter said, as we were watching the sunset Monday evening, surrounded by some very drunk Mexicans and some very piercing Mariachi music, "How do you like us crazy Mexicans!" It was pretty wild. But I will say, that when it comes to having a good time, Mexicans on these holidays fully commit: food, drink, music, they have their fill of it.

Even the birds at the beach seemed to have a sense of uninhibited eating at least.

Pelicans, Great Frigate Birds, and Terns were all feasting on the poor, unsuspecting schools of sardines

It was a frenzy of activity and competition. This poor fisherman even got his line caught around the foot of a pelican, but was, thankfully, eventually able to release it. As you can see it was a most beautiful day

The town was alive all weekend. Apparently, many Mexicans come from the inland towns and villages and splurge on a weekend at the sea. There is music everywhere and we were even lucky enough to catch the tail end of a horse parade as we made our way up from the beach

While the caballeros had pretty much passed by, the señoritas had not

As with everything Mexican, it was clearly a family affair as evidenced by the padre and his hijo

As you can see, it stopped traffic and tourists as well.

Otherwise, it was a very satisfying, but uneventful evening. We had lunch out at the beach on Sunday. We shared a delicious Azteca soup. It was a little different take on tortilla soup, but very good. With the Super Bowl on Sunday evening, we missed the sunset, but Monday was lunch in and dinner out, which included a rather dramatic sunset under very threatening and cloudy skies

As you can see, the birds continued to pursue another meal

And, as the sun settled in the west, we turned to a new restaurant, Serrano Meat House and Polley enjoyed a Beef Juice Soup and I had some steak tacos. Not our usual sort of thing, meat, but they were both very good and the variety of sauces, and salas they had to add to the offerings were wonderful. This morning, as we begin our fifth week in PV, the skies now look clear and the day looks very promising. With the weekend just a memory, the town will be hands of gringos once again - - - how sad!
